Course Description:
Reality Language™ for the Workplace courses provide on-the-job connective Spanish or English language training for native speakers of English or Spanish, so that they may connect with each other around words and phrases specifically used in their workplaces. Emphasis is on usable vocabulary rather than grammar, with speaking and listening skills being the main focus. Students will be expected to fully engage in interactive classroom activities which are designed to allow participants to internalize reproducible ‘bites’ of language for immediate use. Reality Spanish™ students are expected to utilize the computer CD-ROM and articulated workbook, while Reality English™ students are expected to use the hardcopy workbook and audio CDs to enhance their learning outside of the classroom. In addition to the language components of the classes, participants will be expected to research and discuss cultural issues which pertain to co-workers or clients who are speakers of their target language.
Goals:
- to help connect co-workers with each other and professionals with clients who speak the
other target language
- to broaden awareness of similarities and differences between English speaking Americans’
and Spanish speakers’ cultural beliefs
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- greet, welcome and gather personal information from workers or clients
- give and understand directives of location, time, quantities and safety
- ask directed questions and understand answers in workplace scenarios
- pick out relevant words and phrases from a string of spoken language
- understand more deeply cultural perspectives valued by Hispanic & mainstream Americans
concerning work and safety
Note: These courses give connective language only, and are designed for workers who need context-based initial communication skills. In situations where more complex transactions, procedures or legal issues are the focus, a qualified translator will continue to be needed.
Reality Spanish™ and Reality English™ Courses compliment one another for each targeted industry, ideal for companies who have both languages spoken among their employees.
